Hard Water: What It Costs You and How Softeners Work

Hardness is not a health problem, it is an equipment problem. What scale does to a water heater and how to size a softener properly.

Hard water gets treated as a cosmetic complaint. Spots on the glasses, soap that will not lather, a film in the shower. Those are real but they are the least of it.

The actual cost is what scale does to everything in your house that heats water.

What hardness is

Dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as groundwater moves through rock. Harmless to drink. Some people prefer the taste of hard water.

The problem is what happens when you heat it. Those minerals come out of solution and deposit as scale on any hot surface.

Hardness is measured in grains per gallon or in parts per million. Roughly: under about 3 grains is soft, 3 to 7 moderate, 7 to 10 hard, above 10 very hard. Plenty of New Hampshire wells land in the hard and very hard range.

Where scale costs you money

Water heater. Scale forms a layer on the bottom of a tank or inside the passages of a tankless unit. That layer insulates the water from the heat source, so the heater burns more fuel or draws more electricity for the same hot water. On a tank it also drives the bottom of the tank hotter than designed, shortening its life. On a tankless unit it closes down narrow passages and will eventually stop it working.

Fixtures and valves. Scale builds in aerators, shower heads, and the cartridges inside faucets. Reduced flow, dripping, and premature failure.

Appliances. Dishwashers and washing machines have heating elements and valves that scale up like anything else. Manufacturers list hardness limits in their manuals and most people never read them.

Boilers and any hydronic equipment that gets fed with hard water.

Soap. Hard water reacts with soap instead of lathering, which is where the film and the “never feels rinsed” complaint come from. Softened water uses noticeably less detergent and shampoo.

How a softener works

Ion exchange. The tank is full of resin beads carrying sodium ions. Hard water passes through, the resin grabs the calcium and magnesium and releases sodium in their place. Water comes out soft.

Eventually the resin is loaded and has to be regenerated. Brine from the salt tank flushes through, strips the calcium and magnesium off the resin, recharges it with sodium, and sends the waste down the drain. That is the cycle you hear running at two in the morning.

You are adding a small amount of sodium to your water. For most people that is not a concern, but if somebody in the house is on a strict sodium restricted diet, potassium chloride can be used instead, or the kitchen tap can be plumbed around the softener.

Timer versus metered

This is the one decision that matters most and it is worth understanding.

A timer based softener regenerates on a schedule regardless of use. Simple and cheap. It also regenerates when you were away all week and did not need it, wasting salt and water, and it can fail to regenerate when you had guests and used more than usual, letting hard water through.

A metered softener measures actual water use and regenerates when the resin is genuinely loaded. It costs a little more and it uses meaningfully less salt and water over its life. Get the metered one. This is not a close call.

Sizing

Sizing is grains of hardness times gallons used per day, which gives daily grain load, and from there you pick a resin capacity that gives a sensible regeneration interval.

Undersized means constant regeneration, high salt use, and hard water breaking through at peak demand. Oversized means the resin sits loaded for too long between regenerations, which is its own problem.

This is why the test result matters. Somebody who quotes you a softener without asking your hardness number and your household size is picking off a shelf.

Sequence with other equipment

If you also have iron, sediment, or low pH, order matters:

  • Sediment filtration goes first, protecting everything downstream
  • pH neutralization generally goes before the softener, since low pH affects resin life
  • Dedicated iron removal usually goes before the softener, because heavy iron fouls resin

A softener will handle small amounts of iron. Ask it to handle a lot and you will foul the resin and be replacing it early.

Maintenance

Not much, but not zero.

Keep the salt tank supplied, ideally at least a third full, and use clean pellets rather than rock salt. Break up any salt bridge, which is a crust that forms across the tank leaving an air gap so the salt never reaches the water. Clean the brine tank every year or two. Resin lasts a long time but not forever, typically ten to fifteen years, less if it has been fouled with iron or chlorine.

Whether it is worth it

If you are in the hard or very hard range and you are on a well, yes, and the water heater alone usually justifies it. If you are borderline at 4 or 5 grains, it is a comfort preference more than an economic one, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a tank you do not need.
