Rust Stains and Grit in the Water: Iron and Sediment

Orange staining, black specks, and sand in the aerators are three different problems with three different fixes. A softener is not always the answer.

These are the calls that start with a photo of a toilet tank. Here is how to tell which problem you have.

Orange or reddish brown staining

Iron. Very common in this area.

Stains on porcelain, orange tinted laundry, a metallic taste. The tricky part is that iron shows up in different forms and they need different treatment.

Ferrous, or clear water iron. The water comes out of the tap clear and turns orange after it sits in a glass or in the toilet tank. The iron is dissolved and oxidizes on contact with air. This is the more common form on wells here.

Ferric, or red water iron. The water is already discolored coming out of the tap. The iron is already oxidized into particles.

Iron bacteria. Slimy orange or reddish gel in the toilet tank, sometimes a swampy smell. Living organisms that feed on iron. This one needs disinfection, not just filtration, and it will keep coming back if you only filter.

Why it matters: a softener will remove modest amounts of clear water iron and will do nothing useful for ferric iron or iron bacteria. Send a lot of iron through a softener and you foul the resin, which shortens its life and eventually degrades the softening too.

For meaningful iron, you want a dedicated oxidizing filter ahead of the softener. It oxidizes the dissolved iron into particles and then catches them. Which media depends on your concentration, your pH, and whether manganese is along for the ride.

Black specks or black staining

Manganese, usually alongside iron. Black or dark brown staining, specks in the water, sometimes a bitter taste.

Treated similarly to iron with oxidizing filtration, though manganese generally needs higher pH to oxidize well, so on our acidic groundwater a neutralizer often has to come first for the filter to work at all.

Worth noting that manganese has drinking water health guidance, particularly for infants, so it is not purely cosmetic. Get a real lab number rather than guessing from the staining.

Sand, grit, or cloudy water

Sediment. Physical particles rather than dissolved minerals.

Grit in the aerators, sand in the bottom of the toilet tank, cloudy water that clears if you let it stand.

Causes: a shallow well drawing from a sandy formation, a failing well screen, a pump set too low and stirring the bottom, recent work on the well, or in some cases deteriorating pipe.

If this is new, it is worth having the well itself looked at rather than just filtering. A sudden change in sediment can mean a mechanical problem down the well, and a filter is treating a symptom.

Treatment is mechanical filtration sized to the particle. Spin down separators for coarse material, cartridge filters for finer. Match the micron rating to what is actually in the water: too coarse and it passes through, too fine and you are changing plugged cartridges every couple weeks.

Sediment filtration goes first in the treatment train. It protects everything downstream, and softener resin and filter media both hate abrasive grit.

Cloudy water that clears from the bottom up

Air, not sediment. Fill a glass and watch it. If it clears from the bottom upward within a minute or two, those are dissolved air bubbles and there is nothing in your water.

Usually a well pump drawing some air, a waterlogged pressure tank, or a small leak on the suction side. Not a filtration problem.

The mistake I see most

Somebody has a staining problem, buys a softener because that is the water treatment product people have heard of, and it helps a little for a year and then stops helping at all. What happened is that the iron fouled the resin.

Get a test. Match the equipment to the actual result and get the sequence right. Roughly:

  1. Sediment filtration
  2. pH correction if needed, because oxidation depends on it
  3. Iron and manganese removal
  4. Softener
  5. Any point of use polishing, like carbon for taste or a dedicated drinking water system

Skipping straight to step four is the common and expensive error.

Maintenance is not optional

Every one of these has upkeep. Cartridges get changed, media beds get backwashed, some media gets replaced every several years, oxidizing systems may need chemical replenishment.

A treatment system nobody maintains stops treating, quietly, and you find out from the stains coming back. Ask what the maintenance schedule is before you buy, and be honest with yourself about whether you will do it. Sometimes the simpler system that gets maintained beats the better system that does not.
